Signs You May Need A Periodontal Exam

You keep your teeth clean, but is that enough? There are many things that contribute to good dental and oral health. One of the most important ways you can ensure that your mouth is healthy is by having the appropriate dental exams. A periodontal exam is vital to preventive care and is especially important if you are starting to show signs of periodontal disease.  You can visit Dr. Jason Zuch at Zuch Periodontics and Dental Implants for a periodontal consultation in Scottsdale, AZ (also Phoenix, Paradise Valley, Carefree, Cave Creek).

Signs You May Need A Periodontal Exam

Some of the signs of periodontal disease can include:

  • Swollen gums
  • Bleeding gums
  • Receding gums
  • Bad breath

If you are experiencing any of these symptoms, it could be an indicator that you are developing periodontal disease. When left untreated, periodontal disease can threaten the health of your teeth, gums, and the bones of the mouth.

What Is Periodontal Disease?

Periodontal disease is infection and inflammation of the gums. Many people think that their oral health is primarily dependant on the health of their teeth. The health of the gums, however, is just as important. In fact, gum health is foundational to the health of the entire mouth.

The most common form of periodontal disease is gingivitis. Gingivitis is the inflammation of the surface of the gums. This can happen when proper flossing is ignored. Food and bacteria can get stuck beneath the gum line causing infection. The gums will often swell and change color when gingivitis is present. Gingivitis can be treated if caught early at a periodontal consultation in Scottsdale, AZ (also Phoenix, Paradise Valley, Carefree, Cave Creek).

When gingivitis is left untreated, it can progress into periodontitis. This is a more severe form of gum infection and inflammation. At this stage, the infection has collected in pockets beneath the gum line. This problem will require more intense treatments in order to reverse it.

When problems like these are left untreated, the gum line will start to recede. This will leave otherwise healthy teeth vulnerable to decay and loss. Infection can even reach into the jawbone as well, causing serious infections and health problems.
